Carmen Ercell Martin Stahl, 100, of Raleigh, formerly of Fayetteville, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023, at Whispering Pines Gracious Retirement Living.
Ercell was born on October 20, 1922, in Bladen County, NC to John Martin and Thelma Molly Martin. Her father was logging the pine forest in White Oak and Cedar Creek NC. In her early youth she relocated to Colonial Heights, VA, her father’s home. She graduated from Petersburg High School and worked at Fort Bellwoods during World War II. She met her future husband, Wallace R. Stahl, at Fort Bellwoods after his return from combat in the European Theater. After their marriage, they moved to Miami, FL for several years before deciding to return to VA. On their return trip, they stopped to visit her relatives in Fayetteville, NC and decided to settle there. She and Wallace worked at Fort Bragg until he was reactivated into the Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Wallace remained in the Army after the Missile Crisis and she and the family soon joined her husband in Mainz, Germany, where he was stationed. The family then returned to Fayetteville where the children were raised and they retired. After Wallace’s death in 2003, she relocated to Raleigh to be closer to family.
Ercell was a member of Saint Andrews Methodist Church in Fayetteville where she was very active especially with the United Methodist Women.
Ercell is survived by her children, Carmen Denise Stewart and Wallace R. Stahl Jr.; grandchildren, Robin Charlet, Melissa Pomeroy, Ryan Stahl and Kevin Stahl; great grandchildren, Lilly Pomeroy-Spence, Jimi Spence and Zion Mozingo.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the Jernigan-Warren Chapel. Burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park.
