Donald Melvin Obituary

Donald Lionel Melvin, 86, of Fayetteville passed away on Monday, October 11, 2021, at his residence with his family by his side.

Donald was born on November 15, 1934, in Cumberland County to the late Joseph Gray Melvin and Elizabeth Horne Melvin. He was a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church and a past member of Culbreth Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was the longtime comptroller with Cape Fear Building Supply.  His preferred job was a golfer and he spent many hours on courses with Doctor Newman’s Wednesday Group and the Saturday Highland Country Club 8am group with Frank Mullin, Harold Holmes, Hooper Hall, Harry Horrocks, Sid Lovette, and Greg Allen. His Sunday job for many years was Sunday School Teacher and he filled that role with joy and happiness.  Enjoying the Red Sox and Panthers was a favorite hobby for him. Although not a musician, he took every opportunity to hear music from his grandson Tyler.  Donald never knew a stranger and is surely greeting everyone in Heaven today.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Gathering Hall. A private burial will be held at Lafayette Memorial Park.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. Benny Ray Melvin and Odell Melvin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bobby Ivey (Geneva), Ted Ivey and Hilton Cashion.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley Ivey Melvin; daughter, Karen Melvin Ingram and husband Mark; grandson, Tyler Ingram and wife Ashley; a great grandson, Brooks Ingram; sister, Patricia Cashion; sister-in-law, Grace Melvin; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Linda Thompson (Fate), Lynn Ivey (Brenda), Louise Ivey and numerous nieces and nephews.
