Dorothy Nunnery Obituary

Dorothy Nunnery, beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, at the age of 101. Born on October 13, 1924, in Long Island, New York, Dorothy lived a life defined by resilience, devotion, and love for her family.

Raised in an orphanage, Dorothy learned independence and strength early in life. As a young woman working as a nanny, she traveled to Miami, Florida, where she met the love of her life, Willis Henry Nunnery, who was stationed there with the United States Army. The two were married in 1942 and eventually settled in Stedman, North Carolina, where they built a home and raised seven children. Willis preceded her in death in 1985 along with her four sons; Sherman “Buddy”, James “Jimmy”, Johnathan “Johnny”, and Willis Jr and a daughter; Lily. Two daughters, Mary and Grace survive her.

Dorothy was a woman of deep faith, hard work, and generosity. She worked in farming and later served faithfully with the Salvation Army in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she was known for her dedication as a secretary and fundraiser. She gave freely of her time and talents, always focused on helping others.

Known affectionately for her competitive bingo and card-playing skills, and word puzzles. Dorothy also had a creative spirit. She loved crocheting and knitting and shared that love with her family through handmade blankets, doilies, and treasured gifts each Christmas. She also enjoyed spending time with her family fishing. Her famous hushpuppies were a highlight of family gatherings, especially at her daughter Mary’s annual pig pickin’.

Dorothy lived through some of the most significant moments in American history, including the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Through it all, she remained steady, humble, and devoted to those she loved.

She leaves behind a remarkable legacy through her family, including 21 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, 55 great-great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-great-grandchildren. Her life touched generations, and her love will continue to be felt for years to come.

Dorothy will be remembered for her strength, kindness, faith, and the deep love she had for her family. She will be dearly missed and forever cherished.

A Funeral service will be held Sunday, February 8, 2026 at 12pm at  Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The family will receive friends an hour prior at 11am. Dorothy will be laid to rest at Stedman Church of God and Prophecy following the service.
