Earl "Mack" Harris Obituary

Earl McGougan “Mack” Harris, age 92, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 31st. He was born on January 5th, 1931 to the late Ausband Gentry Harris and wife, Annie B McGougan Harris.

Mack was a life long member of Galatia Presbyterian Church. He married the love of his life, Peggy Love Core, on November 1st, 1953.  

Mack lived a long full life of public service working in many different occupations. He served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1950 and co-owned and operated the Harris Amoco station in the 71st community.  Mack also owned and operated a Putt Putt golf course in Baltimore, Maryland from 1959 to 1962. He served as a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputy in the early 60s and left the sheriff’s office to become a firefighter with the Fort Bragg Fire Department in 1966. In 1979 Mack medically retired from the Fort Bragg Fire Department and returned to the sheriff’s office to work as an Arson Investigator for several years.  He was also a founding charter member of the Lake Rim Volunteer Fire Department serving from 1961 to 1983 and served as Fire Chief in 1972.  In his retirement he also served as a bus driver for four years with the Cumberland County School System. Mack’s hobbies included gardening and picking and grinning with old friends playing the mandolin, the electric guitar, and the banjo. He was also an avid book reader. He actually kept a record of books as he read them. It totaled over 3,300.

Mack is predeceased by his wife Peggy, and is survived by his daughter Joyce Oliver (Ollie),son Jim (Fran), and son Jeff (Dottie); grandchildren, Angela Greene, Jason Oliver, Christina Ferguson (Aaron), Lauren Cranford (Sam), Joshua Harris (Hayley); great grandchildren, Avery Greene, Asher Cranford, Lucas Cranford, Lily Ferguson, Emma Cranford, Hayes Harris, and Wyatt Ferguson.  

Special thanks are given to the Carolina Inn Assisted Living Facility and Gentiva Hospice.

Visitation will be from 6–8 p.m. on Saturday, June 3rd at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 3:30 PM on Sunday, June 4th at Galatia Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will also be receiving friends at the home of Jeff and Dottie at 6889 Beaver Dam Rd. Stedman, NC 28391. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gentiva Hospice 2800 Breezewood Ave. Suite 100, Fayetteville, NC 28303 in memory of Earl “Mack” Harris.
