Edith Grace Monroe Wood, age 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 4, 2024, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Born on December 11, 1927, in Raeford, NC, she was the daughter of William and Bessie Monroe.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Clyde Thomas Wood Sr.; her parents; and three of her four siblings: brothers Tracy and Harold Monroe and sister Gladys Monroe McGougan.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Steadman (Mike) of Mt. Pleasant; her son, Clyde Wood (Martha) of Fayetteville; her brother, Arnold Monroe (Ava Ray) of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren: Adam Steadman, Catherine Parker (Brian), Megan Wood, Grant Steadman (Caroline), Caroline Williams (Dunc), Rebecca Foss (Tyler), Cameron Steadman (Anna), and Thomas Wood (Liz); fourteen great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, James, and Elaine Parker; Mary Charles and McNeill Duggins; Duncan, Monroe, and Bower Williams; Anne Marie Foss; Jack and Sam Steadman; Margot and Mary Frances Wood; and a great-grandchild due to be born this month, along with many nieces and nephews.
Edith grew up on a farm in the Rockfish community of Raeford. After marrying Thomas, they lived in Raeford until 1963, when they moved to Fayetteville where Thomas worked as a homebuilder. Together, they became active members of MacPherson Presbyterian Church.
Edith loved playing golf and fishing, especially at Holden Beach, where the family enjoyed countless vacations. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed crocheting. In their later years, Edith and Thomas cherished their time spent traveling across the country with friends in their RV. Above all, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Affectionately known as "E” by her grandchildren, she centered her life around her family, offering unwavering love and support. Her home was a favorite gathering place, where she welcomed everyone with open arms and a warm smile.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MacPherson Presbyterian Church or the Thomas and Edith Wood Endowment for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support at the Community Foundation (P.O. Box 2345 Fayetteville, NC 28302).
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 1 P.M. at MacPherson Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the MacPherson Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A reception will be held at 2 P.M. in the fellowship hall.
