Elizabeth Holmes Veasey, 91, of Stedman, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on July 7, 1933, in Harnett County, North Carolina, Elizabeth was the daughter of the late William and Mary Holmes. She spent many years residing in Delaware with her late husband, Jim Veasey, where they built a life together while continuing Jim’s family business in power equipment. United by their shared love of golf, the couple spent countless hours on the course. Elizabeth, ever independent and spirited, insisted on walking the course unless a golf cart was required.
Following Jim’s passing in 1998, Elizabeth relocated to North Carolina, where she became deeply involved in her community. A passionate card player, she founded a poker group in Gates Four over 20 years ago, which she remained active in until recently when she was unable to attend. Her love for bridge spanned over four decades, and in the last four years, after moving in with her daughter, she cherished daily games they played together.
Elizabeth had a deep affection for animals and treated her pets as cherished members of the family. She also found great joy in the simple pleasures of life—especially visits to Topsail Beach, where she never missed a sunrise or sunset.
She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Whitehurst and husband Steve; her son, Anthony Hairr; and her beloved grandchildren: Rick Hairr, Heath Hairr, Patrick Byrd, Melissa Hairr, Mackenzie Hairr, Dalton Huston, and Brice Amerson. She is also survived by her devoted dog, Benji.
In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Veasey; her ten siblings and her beloved pets, Jessie and Boots
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to her dedicated caregiver, Kay Jackson, Alex and Kristy from Cornerstone; hospice social worker, Regina; hospice nurse, Ariel; and hospice aide, Nancy, for their exceptional compassion and care during Elizabeth’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Elizabeth’s memory to the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society, in honor of her deep love and compassion for animals.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at 2pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
