On December 9, 1933 in Stedman, North Carolina, Gilda was born to Wiley and Neta Kate Hubbard. She had many wonderful memories of her early life with her parents. She often talked about the errands with her father.
After high school, Gilda attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Following her graduation, she moved back to Cumberland County to her first teaching position in Hope Mills, through which she impacted and changed countless lives. A short while later, a coworker introduced Gilda to William “Bill” Roumillat, the absolute love of her life, and the pair were married six months later (and remained so for 55 years, until his death in 2014).
After marrying Bill, the lovebirds moved to Chapel Hill while Bill completed his degree. The pair then moved to Winston-Salem, where they were both teachers in the Forsyth County School System until they retired. In Winston-Salem, Gilda became a Vocation Placement Coordinator for the special education department. Due to her foresight and dedication to her students, she was able to help many of her students enroll in their employment stock benefit programs, resulting in the financial security and retirement of these students when R.J. Reynolds closed. Her role in preparing Special Education students and helping them find and retain employment is a shining example of the patience, compassion, ingenuity and love that she met everyone she encountered. While in Winston-Salem, Bill and Gilda welcomed and raised their daughter, Julie, a true light in both of their lives.
After many years in Winston-Salem, Bill and Gilda retired and decided to return to Stedman. They lived in Stedman for over 30 years and enjoyed their time together traveling between Stedman and Holden Beach.
Gilda’s love and passion for others was apparent in everything she did. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. She was truly the sunshine in our lives, and will be greatly missed.
