Helen Devine Obituary

Helen Hammonds Devine, 81, of Fayetteville, NC, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at her daughter’s residence in Fayetteville.  She was born October 29, 1939 in Latta, SC to Gussie Mae Hammonds.  As a very young girl, they moved to Pembroke, NC where her mother married Sanford Locklear.

Helen was the oldest of nine children.  She loved and cherished every one of them and that was evident in the relationships she had with each of her siblings.  Helen met her husband of 43 years, Paul W. Devine, in Fayetteville, NC where she owned a business.  Paul served in the Army for 30 years, so Helen had the great opportunity of traveling the world with him and being a supportive wife.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Paul Wesley Devine; her mother, Gussie Mae Locklear; her father, Sanford Locklear; sisters, Wanda Locklear and Ann Mortensen; and her brother, Martin Locklear.

She is survived by her daughter, Shela Devine Rivers of Fayetteville, NC; her son, Max Riddle and wife Amanda of Harvest, AL; her sisters, Suzette Jones and husband Joseph, and Fontain Locklear, both of Pembroke, NC; her brothers, James W. Hammonds of Greensboro, NC, Sanford Locklear Jr. of Pembroke, NC, and John Wayne Locklear and wife Barbara of KS; seven (7) grandchildren, Mandy, Nicole, Haley, Brandon, Hannah, Caleb, and Danyele; and 4 great-grandchildren.

She spent a large majority of her life serving both family and the church.  She loved to cook and enjoyed feeding family and friends.  She was a member Walstone Memorial Baptist Church where she spent many loving hours volunteering in the kitchen.

Visitation will be at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home, 6pm – 8pm, Tuesday, 9 March 2021.  Funeral Services will be at Walstone Memorial Baptist Church, 12 pm, Wednesday, 10 March 2021 followed by burial at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.
