Hilda Myrtle Massengill Overfelt died in her sleep peacefully, Sunday morning, 8:25 a.m. on March 23, 2025, at the Woodlands Nursing home, Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Born to Ransom Lee Massengill and Lillie E. Snead Massengill in Johnston County, NC. on October 17, 1923 and welcomed by siblings Lee Massengill, Wilton Massengill, Sarah Massengill Williamson, and Florence Massengill Walker. The young children were separated after the death of their mother, but were all reunited during World War II, remaining nearly inseparable throughout the remainder of their lives. Hilda’s husband, brothers, sisters, and son Christopher Massengill Overfelt preceded her in death.
Hilda graduated from Four Oaks High School where she the editor of the school newspaper and worked as a part-time nurse. She met the love of her life when she was serving as a telephone operator at Camp Mackall in 1944. She married PFC Trumon Louis Overfelt, October 8, 1944, in Bennettsville, SC, prior to his deployment to the European theater with the 13th Airborne Division. After the war, the family grew to six during multiple moves to and from military bases in occupied Japan, Germany, and every corner of the United States.
Hilda, Trumon and their children, Hilda Jacquelyn Overfelt Darden, Michael Lewis Overfelt, Christopher Massengill Overfelt, and Todd Maxwell Overfelt found themselves in Fayetteville upon Trumon’s retirement.
Though grieved by the death of her husband, MSG Trumon L. Overfelt, Airborne/Ranger, August 9,1983, and the loss of son Christopher August 17, 2017, Hilda is survived by her three children; grandchildren, Jason Buie Darden, Joel Ransom Darden, Abbigail Elizabeth Overfelt, Michael Pittillo, Michelle Cooper Pittillo, Kelly O’Donnell, and John O’Donnell; her great grandchildren Ava Katherine Darden, Bennett Joseph Darden, Zoe Madden, and Mason Jeremiah Darden; and her daughters-in-law, Mary Overfelt and Patricia Overfelt and beloved son-in-law, Ernest Joseph Darden, and Douglas Zincke.
A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 2:00 pm in the Jernigan-Warren Chapel, the family will recieve friends an hour prior. A committal service will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey St.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association in Hilda’s name.
