In Loving Memory of Jean Goodrich Hair and Eugene G. “Monk” Hair.
With a deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jean Goodrich Hair and her devoted husband, Eugene G. “Monk” Hair. Jean passed away on July 21, 2025, and Monk followed her just five days later on July 26, 2025, both in their home in Grays Creek, North Carolina. Jean was 82 and Monk was 85. They shared a remarkable 64 years of marriage -- a love story that endured through every season of life and now continues into eternity.
Jean was born in Fayetteville, NC, the daughter of the late Margaret Baker and Joel Duncan Goodrich. Monk, also a Fayetteville native, was the son of the late Archie Crayton and Margaret Tolar Hair. Together, they raised a family and built a life rooted in love, laughter, friendship, and community.
Jean and Monk are survived by their daughter, Jennifer Hair McCormac; son-in-law, Dennis McCormac; and granddaughter, Jessica Margaret McCormac. Jean is remembered by her siblings, Joel Duncan Goodrich, Jr. and Janet Goodrich McMorris, and preceded in death by her sister, Judith Goodrich Webb. Monk is remembered by his brother, Larry Mitchell “Mickey” Hair, and preceded in death by his sister, Patsy Ann Hair Piner.
Monk was a welder by trade and a true entrepreneur, having owned several businesses including Certified Welding and the Cumberland County Speedway. He was happiest with his dog in his truck heading out to hunt or fish. While his love for fox hunting earned him friends across the state, he was just as happy being with friends at the barn watching NASCAR races or just hanging out. Monk had a big heart and would go out of his way to help others, treating many friends like family.
Jean spent much of her career as a skilled bookkeeper for Vause Equipment, but her talents extended well beyond the office. She had a flair for fashion, an eye for flowers, and a green thumb that kept her yard in full bloom. Jean loved making her home beautiful and decorated it for every holiday. She was known for her delicious home cooking and bringing together family and friends to share good food, laughter, and memories. A lover of beach music and dancing, Jean found joy in shagging events and loved being part of any gathering that brought people together. The parties/weddings/celebrations at the barn became the stuff of legends -- filled with laughter, stories, and lasting memories.
Their home, lovingly tended and always open to visitors, stood as a testament to their hard work and hospitality. Driving up the long drive and seeing the well-kept gardens and welcoming porch felt like arriving at a peaceful oasis, a place where friends of all ages found warmth, guidance, laughter, and a seat at the table.
Jean and Monk touched countless lives with their kindness, love, support, and generosity. They nurtured connections that spanned decades, offering encouragement, wisdom, and care to all who entered their lives. The love they gave so freely was returned to them many times over. Their legacy is one of kindness, resilience, and unending generosity -- a gift to be cherished and remembered by all whose lives they touched.
Jean, Monk and their family will be eternally grateful to JD and Heather Gunther, Beth McFayden and Deborah Threatt for providing the loving care which allowed them to spend their final days in their own home.
Monk made sure Jean had anything she wanted and above all, she wanted them to be buried together. Their love for each other was as evident as the sun rising over their beautiful property. It is fitting, and perhaps even poetic, that they left this world together and will be laid to rest together.
A joint graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, at Cape Fear Baptist Church Cemetery, 6041 Butler Nursery Rd. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 in the fellowship hall. All who knew and loved Jean and Monk are invited to join in this celebration of their lives, their love, and their legacy.
