John Howard Wellons, Jr.

John Howard Wellons, Jr., 72, peacefully passed away on Friday, April 21, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Born in Harnett County on May 31, 1950, he was the son of the late John Howard Wellons and Alma Ruffin Wellons. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Jim P. Craft, Jr. and sister-in-law Rebecca F. Wellons.

John learned the value of faith, family and hard work at an early age. As a young boy, John worked at his family’s candy plant unloading jars and sweeping floors. John participated in Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout.  He volunteered with Dunn Rescue Squad and served his country in the US Army Reserves.

After graduating from Dunn High School in 1968, John moved to Fayetteville and became a partner in the family property management business.  He was owner of Golden Street Homes and instrumental in managing properties in Fayetteville and an assisted living facility in Smithfield.  He served on the board of the John H. Wellons Foundation and served as President after the death of his father.

John will be remembered as a giving person and servant that was active at his church, Praise Fellowship. He enjoyed cooking and lending a hand to widows and those in need. He exemplified what was instilled by his parents at an early age to be the hands and feet of Jesus. 

John loved his family and always wanted everyone to eat together and fellowship.  He enjoyed fishing and working in his yard, and traveling with friends and family.

John is survived by his wife, Deborah Hairr Wellons; sister, Sylvia Wellons Craft of Farmville; brothers, Robert P. Wellons and wife Su Lou of Linden and Don G. Wellons of Erwin; nieces Andrea C. Howard and husband John, Kimberly A. Craft both of Farmville, Leigh W. Thompson and husband Seth of Linden and Lauren W. White of Lillington and several great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11am to 12pm on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Praise Fellowship Church.  A funeral will follow in the church at 12 pm.  Entombment will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens.

His family would like to thank his caregivers from Visiting Angels and Bayada Hospice.
