John R. Surrett met his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 10, 2024, after many years of suffering from Parkinson’s disease. He was born on April 2, 1940, in Candler, NC, to the late Reverend Joseph Riley Surrett and Lilly Johnson Surrett.
John married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Skaggs, in 1959. They enjoyed 65 wonderful years together. In the early years of their marriage, they moved to Washington, DC, where they were blessed with the birth of their son, Jeffrey Scott Surrett. They both worked in the fingerprint division of the FBI during that time. Longing to return to the mountains, they moved back to Western North Carolina in 1961, where John began working for Mackie Vending Co. His job with Mackie eventually took them to Fayetteville, NC, in 1971. John later found his passion as a sales consultant at Bullard Furniture Store, retiring after 28 years.
John loved traveling, with several trips to Europe and many cruises. He enjoyed the beach, the mountains, and cherished time spent with family and friends. He was a longtime member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son Scott Surrett, brother Ralph Surrett, sisters Frankie Ballard and Reva Weatherman, and his father and mother-in-law, Luther and Clara Skaggs.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Carolyn Surrett; sisters Freida Jo Singleton and Ruth Lance (Jim); granddaughter Alexa Smith Surrett; sister-in-law Marjorie Haire; niece Sherry Rosenberg (Barry); his beloved Shih Tzu Pebbles, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church on Thursday, August 22, 2024. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 1:00 p.m. Inurnment will be private at the church columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Snyder Memorial Baptist Church Music Ministry.
