Jose Ontiveros Obituary

Jose Horacio Ontiveros, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, while doing what he loved most — riding his bicycle.

Born on March 5, 1937, in El Paso, Texas, Jose was the youngest son of four children born to the late Jose Marshall Ontiveros and Maria Pro Ontiveros.

A proud veteran, Jose served his country for 24 years in the United States Army, where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Following his retirement from the military, he went on to earn his degree in Education and shared his knowledge as an instructor at Fayetteville Technical Community College, as well as teaching students in his home.

Jose lived a full and active life. He had a deep love for animals and often spoke fondly of the many dogs who had shared his life. His passion for bicycling began when riding with his son in his younger years, and he continued to ride daily—weather permitting—averaging two to three miles each day. He credited exercise for keeping him strong and healthy well into his later years.

At home, Jose took great pride in maintaining a perfectly manicured yard. He spent his life caring for his yard and planting roses for his wife, her favorite flower, often cutting them to display inside their home for her to admire, which he continued after her death.  Known for his sharp mind and technological savvy, he enjoyed helping family and friends set up their electronics and computers.

Jose’s sense of humor, straightforward nature, and generous spirit made him beloved by many. In recent years, he found joy in the convenience of Amazon shopping, often joking about his new “favorite hobby.” Above all, he was a devoted father, grandfather who loved unconditionally and friend whose love and guidance will be deeply missed.

In addition to his parents, Jose was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Healan Ontiveros. He is survived by his daughter, Edith Michelle Hobson; his son, Jose Marshall Ontiveros; grandchildren, Heather Nicole Baker, Rachel Caroline Miranda, and Patricia Ryan Heist; and eight great-grandchildren.

A gathering of friends will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, with Military Honors rendered at 2:00 p.m.
