Joseph Smoot Canady, 81, of Hope Mills, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center due to COVID-19.
Smoot began his career in construction and due to illness went to work with the City of Fayetteville. He retired as a Sanitarian for the Cumberland County Health Department and was an award-winning wine maker and vineyard operator in Gray's Creek. Wild turkey hunting and entertaining his family and friends over a pig cooker were two of his many passions.
Smoot was a faithful member of Green Springs Baptist Church and had Perfect Attendance in Sunday School for 58 years.
He is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Ada Canady; his sisters, Lorraine, Peggy, and Ruby; brothers, Frank, Jr., Vann, Charles; and grandson, Zachary Fields.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Jordan Canady; daughter, Beverly J. Fields (Richard); son, Darrell S. Canady (Cathy); stepsons, William T. "Billy" Cashwell (Stacey), and Richard B. "Ben" Cashwell (Meghann); Grandchildren, Kirby Fields, Troy Cashwell (Paige), Bailey Cashwell, Carolyn Canady, Victoria Canady, Maura Cashwell; Great Grandaughter, Sophia Bennett; brother, MacNeil Canady; and a host of close friends and loved ones.
A Graveside Service will be Sunday, January 17, 2021 at 2 pm in the Green Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
