Joyce Russ Sanderson, 81, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on November 19, 1943, in Cumberland County, Joyce was the daughter of the late Alonza R. Russ and Jessie McDuffie Russ. She was a proud graduate of Stedman High School, where she enjoyed playing on the girls’ basketball team. Joyce married James E. Sanderson, the love of her life, and was widowed at a young age.
She retired from BB&T Bank and found joy in singing with her siblings and spending time with her family. Her greatest joy was being "Meme" to her granddaughter Erin, especially watching her play softball. Joyce was also a devoted N.C. State fan and loved college sports. In her later years, she cherished quiet days at home with her beloved dog, Annie.
Joyce was a woman of strong faith who found comfort in reading her Bible and sharing her quick wit and spirited personality with those around her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Sanderson, and her brother, Norman Russ.
She is survived by her daughter, DeLaine Reid and husband Jamie; granddaughter, Erin Reid; and siblings Shirley Tew, Rudolph Russ, Elaine White, Anita Gillis, Bonnie Clark, Rose Russ and many adored nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, followed by a service in the chapel at 2:30 p.m. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved Jimmy at a private family graveside service at Forest Hill Cemetery in Nashville, N.C.
