Juanita Peoples, 80, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday April 8, 2025, at WakeMed in Raleigh.
She was born to the late Effie and Perry Jackson October 4, 1944, in Dunn, North Carolina, just about two miles from Spivey’s Corner.
Juanita had a strong love for dancing, more specifically, shagging. Throughout her high school and college days, her desire was to become a good shag dancer. She was able to accomplish this due to the influence of places like the Scrambled Dog, The Cellar-Charlotte, NC and Dinkados-Fayetteville, NC. With all her practice and commitment, she was later elected to the Fayetteville Area Shag Association Hall of Fame.
After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill in 1967, Juanita moved to Fayetteville to pursue her teaching career. That is where she met and married Buddy Peoples in 1970. Marriage consumed a lot of her life, and shagging started to become a thing of her past. Although, in 1988 she returned to the shag world like she never even left.
In 1998, she retired from teaching but never planned on retiring from shagging as it was always a part of her life she would never let go.
Juanita is survived by her two sons, Adam and Chris Peoples.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Peoples.
A funeral service will be held at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home Saturday April 19,2025 at 2pm. The family will receive friends an hour prior. Burial will follow the funeral service at Lafayette Memorial Park.
