LTC (Ret.) Fernando “Fred” Martinez, 82, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023.
Fred was born on October 21, 1940, in Abilene, TX to the late Jose and Juana Reyes Martinez. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, where he was quarterback on the football team and was honored to be one of the members of the “Team of the Century”.
After retirement from the US Army, Fred taught in the Ft. Bragg School System. He was an avid golfer and a member of Northwood Temple. He served as President of the Goodwill Bible Class and enjoyed working with the Dinner Theatre. He had a heart of gold and loved helping people who could not help themselves. Fred was a loving husband, father, brother, Papa, and friend to all who knew him.
He is predeceased by his parents, siblings, Inez M. Chavez. Isabel M. Himanez, Anita M. Gonzalez, Luis Martinez, Jose Martinez, Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, B. Jean Martinez; son, Jeffrey Martinez; daughter, Angela Michele Brouse (Steven); brothers, Antonio Martinez, Doroteo Martinez; sister Rebecca Martinez; grandsons, Matthew Brandon Martinez and Nicholas Aaron Martinez; and many nieces, nephews and friends
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 20, 2023, from 11:30 to 12:30 pm at Northwood Temple followed by a funeral service at 12:30 at the church. Burial with military honors will follow at 2 pm at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
