LTC (Ret) A. Dwayne Aaron Obituary

LTC (RET) A. Dwayne Aaron

April 26, 1949-November 25, 2025 (Age 76)

After a brief battle with kidney cancer, Dwayne Aaron passed away on November 25, 2025, at his home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, surrounded by his family.

After graduating from Lyons High School in 1967, Dwayne dedicated his life to his country. He graduated from the US Military Academy West Point in 1971 and spent some of his best years at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division, the 509th Airborne Division, the 18th Airborne Corps, and various Special Operations units for 25 years. Sadly, his military career was cut short by a serious heart condition. In 1995 he received a heart transplant and began a new chapter of his life.

While Dwayne continued to do contract work for the Army, he began to pursue other interests as well. He developed a line of seasoning blends for his family's deer processing facility in Lyons, Georgia, and eventually took over all facility operations. Under Dwayne's leadership, Rackettown Wildlife Club flourished and he enjoyed "making every deer a table trophy."

A true "Renaissance man," Dwayne had many hobbies. He demonstrated his writing prowess as an author of All Roads Lead to Baghdad: Army Special Operations Forces in Iraq. An excellent painter, he created beautiful works that we will always treasure in our homes. His love of plants and flowers showed in his lush yard (which he might say is the best in the neighborhood). He also loved to kayak in the waves of Daytona Beach, Florida, and one of his best memories was kayaking alongside a pod of dolphins.

Dwayne was involved in many local clubs and organizations, including the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry, where he was a guardsman. Additionally, he served as past adjutant of the Fayetteville Arsenal Camp #168 of Sons of Confederate Veterans.

As a dedicated family man, Dwayne made a lasting impact on us all. He was always there for every milestone, even though there was a time when he wasn't sure that would happen. Dwayne was a true warrior who overcame many health obstacles and continued to live his life to the fullest. He loved life and his family, and we are all better off because of it.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Aaron; his mother, Thelma Powell Aaron; his niece, Emma Coughlin; and his beloved dog Beau. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria Kavakos Aaron; his son, Sam Aaron (Michelle); his daughter, Katy Aaron Preston (Brooks); his grandchildren, Caleb Preston and Leah Preston; his brother, Terry Aaron; his sister, Renee Aaron Coughlin (Jeff); his nieces, Ellen Coughlin, Abigail Coughlin, and Laura Sampson Schewe (John); his nephews, Connor Coughlin (Kelly), Cody Aaron, Cayson Aaron, and Bill Sampson (Angel, Will, and Marin); and his sister-in-law, Lorraine Kavakos Timmons.
