Larry Sessoms Obituary

Larry Royal Sessoms, 79, of Fayetteville, NC, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 17, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.  He was at his home, surrounded by his family when he passed on to Heaven.

Larry was born on December 3, 1944, in Fayetteville, NC to the late Jesse E. Sessoms and Berline R. Sessoms.  Larry was a graduate of Fayetteville High School, Class of 1963 where he played football on the state championship team. Larry served in the U.S. Army as a CH-47 Chinook Helicopter Crew Chief in Vietnam in 1968.  He was a member of Northwood Temple Church, where he served as a Deacon, sang in the choir, and helped establish the very first Royal Rangers program in the Pentecostal Holiness Denomination.

Known by many of his friends as “Captain Hook,” Larry owned and operated “Larry’s Towing Service” for over 40 years in Fayetteville, NC.  Larry grew up on Glenville Avenue in Haymount, and he and his wife, Pat, raised their three sons, Larry Jr., Jesse, and Christian there as well.  He rarely walked into any business establishment in Fayetteville where someone didn’t know him and stop to speak to him.  His love of Fayetteville and the Haymount neighborhood can only be matched by his love for Lake Waccamaw, NC, where he and his family spent most weekends and summer holidays camping in their RVs and enjoying watersports on the lake.

Larry was a phenomenal husband, father, brother, grandfather, son, and friend to all who knew him, but most importantly, he loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, with all his heart. He was a Prayer Warrior who never passed up a chance to pray with a friend or family member in need, any place, any time.  Known as “Daddy” by his sons, and “Poppy” by his seven grandchildren, he was the quintessential scriptural example of what a husband and father should be.  We mourn his loss here on earth, but we celebrate his reception into his eternal home in Heaven! We will see him again!

Larry was preceded in Heaven by his wife of 56 years, Pat Sessoms, his father, Jesse E. Sessoms, his mother, Berline R. Sessoms, and his brother, Jesse T. Sessoms.  He is survived by his sons, Larry Sessoms Jr. and wife Tiffany, Jesse Sessoms and wife Laura, and Christian Sessoms and wife Jennifer, all of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren, Logan Sessoms, Kaleb Sessoms, Abby Sessoms, John Christian Sessoms, Aiden Sessoms, Martha Sessoms, and Caroline Sessoms, all of Fayetteville, NC; nephews and nieces, Jess Sessoms and wife Mary of Charlotte, NC, Sim Sessoms and husband Howard of Goldsboro, NC, Angie Hedgepeth and husband Philip of Fayetteville, NC, Daniel Woodward of Zebulon, NC, and Ben and Will Hedgepeth of Fayetteville, NC.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Northwood Temple from 9 am to 10:45 am.  Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am in the church sanctuary.
