LeVerne Horne was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. He left this world suddenly on November 3, 2021, at the age of 82 with his sons by his side. He was born to Luther Horne and Ora Lupo Horne on June 22, 1939, in Lumberton, NC.
While attending Stedman High School, he met his first love, Sarah Faircloth. Their relationship evolved as they worked together doing farm work and riding the school bus. They took a train to Dillon, SC where they were married on November 4, 1955. Together, they had three children: Bobby, Edith, and Michael.
LeVerne loved driving the bus for Trailways and Greyhound Bus Lines and he was very proud of his 45 years of driving. While working for the Bus Lines, he received numerous awards such as Trailways Million Mile Safety Award, a Certificate of Recognition of Service for 35 years of Dedicated Service, 35 Year Safe Driver Certificate, Certificate of Recognition of Service for 45 years of Dedicated Service, received a Distinguished Service Award on two occasions, Attendance Award for Outstanding Attendance, and Driver of the Month. His signature look was his neatly pressed bus uniform, pants worn above the belt line, short black zip up cowboy boots, while sporting a concoction of various colognes and perfumes. He truly loved driving buses and always missed it when he retired.
In his spare time he enjoyed flipping between watching Westerns and QVC, buying random items from infomercials, most especially his prized knife collection. He kept an impeccable yard and a clean house, and loved revving up the engines of his vehicles and tractors, and using his leaf blower.
His favorite meal was steak, baked potato, and salad. As a point of pride, he purported to have never eaten chicken in his 82 years of life.
After his first wife, Sarah passed, he met Peggy Norris at Holden Beach and said, “it was love at first sight”. They married September 19, 2015, shared six beautiful years together, and loved each other dearly. Peggy was always by his side and supported him every step of the way.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Faircloth Horne, daughter, Edith Horne Hatem, parents, Luther and Ora Horne, brother, L. B. Horne, and sister, Ruthelene Horne Hall.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy, of Fayetteville; son, Bobby and wife, Sheila; son, Michael and wife, Yvette; and, sister, Barbara Jean Starling. He was a proud Papa to Jaime, Jeremy, Christopher, Tyler, Matthew, Jevin, Jaycey, Tinley, and Bryson.
The family would like to thank the wonderful Caregivers who faithfully attended to him: Peggy, Diane, Edith, and Home Instead Caregiver, Karen.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, from 6pm to 8pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at 12 noon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend G.C. Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park.
