Louise Marks Obituary

Louise Birmingham Marks, 103, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 17, 2025, in Fayetteville, NC, feeling the care and support of her loving family. She was born on October 31, 1921, in the small coal mining community of Cinderella, near Williamson, WV, the daughter of the late William Clay Birmingham and Anna Winfield Birmingham. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John P. Marks; her daughter-in-law, Rose Bill Marks; her brothers, William Clay Birmingham, Jr. and Talmadge Birmingham; her sister, Maxine Straughn; and two infant sisters.

A devoted mother of two, grandmother of four, and great-grandmother of seven, Louise loved and nurtured her family. She witnessed her faith and lived by setting the right example. She was a member of the Greatest Generation and a child of the Great Depression. She worked hard, beginning her adult life as a student and basketball player at Geyer Business College in Charlotte. She became a war bride in 1943 and lived her life as a homemaker, secretary, and servant to her church and community.

The family is deeply appreciative to the too numerous to name staff of Highland House Rehabilitation and Healthcare for their loving care of our mother and grandmother for the last years of her life; to her special friend and caretaker for 17 years, Veronica Daniel; and to Stephanie Thompson who also helped care for her when she resided at home.

Louise is survived by her sons, Rick Marks and wife Cecelia, and David Marks and wife Lynisa, all of Fayetteville; her grandchildren, Bryan Marks and wife Jennifer and their children Lucia, Eleanor and William of Cary, Anna Marks of Wilmington, Alan Marks and wife Morgan and their children Dylan and Zell of Raleigh, and Carrie Doyle and husband Jeremy and their children Peyton and Aubree Rose of Youngsville; and her brother Eugene (Gene) Birmingham of Polkton, NC.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 10:15 until 11:45 at Hay Street United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, NC, where Louise was a faithful and involved member since 1959. A Memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm in the church sanctuary. A private burial in Polkton, NC will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hay Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 320 Hay St., Fayetteville NC 28301.
