Marilyn Toves Obituary

Marilyn June Toves (née Quam), 78, of Fayetteville passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Marilyn was born November 20, 1942 in Aberdeen, SD to the late Violet and Chester Quam.
Marilyn lived on a farm in Spink County, South Dakota with her family where she attended a country grade school. She attended Aberdeen public schools when the family moved to Aberdeen, SD and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1960. She worked at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge 1046 where she met Alfred Toves, and they married in January of 1961.
Marilyn accompanied Alfred to several military duty stations. These included six years in Heidelberg, Germany; two years at Fort Huachuca, AZ; 18 months in Agat, Guam while Alfred served a combat tour in Vietnam; two years at Fort Dix, NJ; 18 months in Pasadena,CA; and eight years at Fort Bragg, NC before settling in Fayetteville, NC upon Alfred’s retirement from active duty. She created and maintained home in each location frequently putting it together upon arrival and preparing to move to the next location (as Alfred said with a wink) “as the First Sergeant.” Between moves, she staunchly supported Alfred and lovingly raised her son, Jeffery.
Marilyn worked as a sales associate with Sears at the Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville following Alfred’s retirement in 1980 from the military until his terminal illness in 2002. She retired from Sears, preferring to stay near Alfred’s side during his decline and until his death in 2003. Prior to, she was active with Alfred in the Retired Military Association of NC and maintained links to the association following his death. She maintained a fierce independence to the end, preferring to live in her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Toves; son, Kent Toves; sisters, Doris Roettele, Marvine Fisher, and Joan Whittlinger.
Services will be held at a later date.
She is survived by her son, Jeff Toves (Jenny) of Dublin, Ohio; sister, Jean Roettele (Jim) of Columbia, South Dakota; brothers, Warren Quam (Helen) of Shell Lake, Wisconsin and Everett Quam (Jeanie) of Aberdeen, SD and granddaughter, Gwen Toves of Dublin, Ohio.
