Maude Thompson Obituary

Maude Olive McCall Thompson, 82 of Beaufort, NC, formerly of Fayetteville, NC passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 in Carteret Health Care where she worked in reception.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 1pm to 2pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, the funeral will follow at 2pm in the funeral home chapel, burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.

Maude McCall Thompson was the youngest of 8 children raised by Alexander McCall and Lou Mallie McCall. They were all born and raised in Stedman NC. There were 4 brothers and 4 sisters. She was the baby of the family and was always cared for by the elder siblings. She felt such loss as the only surviving member of her immediate family. She had at tight bond with her sisters and is now able to be with them and her brothers again. We know she is happy!

She had a great career which started in 1960 at Carolina Telephone and Telegraph in Fayetteville. From there she moved onto working in account receivables at Q& M furniture in Fayetteville. This was a short stint as she moved onto a job at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. She was Registrar Clerk.  She loved this job at the hospital as she always wanted to be a nurse and work with new born babies. She always told us she would sneak up to the baby ward and volunteer to hold the babies. In 1966 she started her career with the Fort Bragg finance and accounting office. She had degrees from Sandhills Community College and Worth Business College in Fayetteville, NC. She worked as Supervisor of AR department there until 1988 when she retired with numerous awards and accolades.

After her retirement from Fort Bragg, She and her husband moved out to Woodlake Golf course in Vass, NC where she enjoyed living on the lake and enjoying the retired life. Not one to sit around long she started using her skills again doing the Bookkeeping for the Sanford NC Moose Lodge and also working part time as a teacher assistant at Bethesda Link School in Aberdeen which was a school for children with substance abuse problems.  She loved children and was always the cool grandmother.  She was always comfortable around children, from holding babies at Cape fear Hospital to working with the kids at Bethesda Link.

She moved to Beaufort in NC in 2004 and still could not sit still. She started working again at Carteret Health Care as dispatch operator and ended her career with them in 2018 at the visitor information desk.  She often provided hugs to everyone in need who came in to visit a loved one. She was known at the hospital as the hugging lady.  We think she used this job to sneak back up and hug the babies. We are sure of it.

She is survived by her 3 sons. Jerry Nunnery of Goldsboro, Larry Nunnery and his spouse Kimberly and their two sons Slade and Zachary of Austin TX and Rick Nunnery and his wife Judy and their 6 children, Ross, Reagan, Sarah, Jamie, Mathew, Ricki Lee and Robert of Fayetteville NC.

there will be a reception following the service at Bethany Historical Society, Bethany Community Building at 2105 Wade Stedman Road, Stedman, NC
