Michael Matteson Obituary

 

Michael John Matteson of Fayetteville, passed away at the Fayetteville V.A. Medical Center on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the age of 79.

Michael was born into a military family in  Roswell, New Mexico on November 27, 1942, to the late Richard Lewis Matteson and Ruth Elizabeth Bedessem Matteson.  He was a 1965 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. His brother Richard James Matteson who preceded him in death was also a 1963 graduate of West Point. They both served two tours in Vietnam, the latter being served together. Their father commissioned all three of his children. Michael retired as a Major from the U.S. Army Special Forces.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery Chapel with Military Honors.

Michael is survived by his companion of 15 years, Caroline Morace; sister, Ruthanne Skov who served in the Army Nurse Corp, and her husband John; nephews, Michael, Eric, Christopher and Gregory Skov, Richard, and James Matteson; and a niece, Janet Matteson.
