Nancy M. Smith

Nancy McQuage Smith, 87, of Fayetteville passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

Nancy was born on September 13, 1937, in Cumberland County, to the late John Oliver McQuage and Mary Magdelene Jones McQuage.

She received a bachelor’s degree in History from Fayetteville State and retired from teaching elementary school, where she taught at Sunnyside Elementary School. She attended Cedar Creek Baptist Church and in recent years attended Sunnyside Presbyterian Church.

While Nancy was a resident at Carolina Highlands, she made many friends she loved and enjoyed. She was known for making others laugh with her quick wit. She was a kind and loving mother, sister, aunt, grandma and friend to all who knew her.

The family will receive friends from 10-10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church followed by a service at 11 a.m. Burial will be held at Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery following the service.

In 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, H.B. Smith, Jr., the love of her life, and shared 52 wonderful years of marriage before his death in 2009.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Karen Roberts; grandchildren, Jeb Carter (Katie) and Angela Roberts; brother, Billy Wray and wife Shelley; sister-in-law, Alice Smith Devane and husband Danny; other grandchildren, Matthew Roberts, Alex Roberts and Tony Roberts; 9 great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
