Nancy Ellon Carter Obituary

Nancy Ellon Bass Carter, 99, of Fayetteville went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at her residence with her family by her side.

Ellon was born on July 14, 1923 in Clinton, NC to John and Nancy Bass. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her heart was for her family and taking care of the homeplace. She filled the family with light, laughter, love, and her exceptional country cooking. She was gifted with an astounding memory, reciting long poems by memory even into her final months. She loved singing songs and sharing sayings from her childhood to those around her, and in her younger years, could play the piano by ear. Ellon loved children and taught the beginner class for over twenty years at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Vander, where she was a long-time member. She also was the past president of the Happy Friendship Class at her church for 25 years. Ellon was dedicated to the Lord, often sharing Jesus and scriptures with her family and friends. She would read the Bible from cover to cover, and her testimony was a smile that shined with the bright love of Jesus. She enjoyed collecting poetry and recipes, gardening, shopping, donating to causes and spending time with her family and friends.

With her husband, they started the first “Pick Your Own” strawberry farm in the area where they later added blueberries, now known as the Carter Blueberry Farm. Ellon was the “Assistant Boss” on the farm, helping her husband with a successful farming business. Ellon and Buck’s love story was admired by all, lasting their lifetime together, 67 years.

Ellon is predeceased by her husband, Troy Butler “Buck” Carter; grandson, Edwin Lamar Beard; brothers, John Almon Bass, Robert Bass, and Kirby Bass; sisters, Maggie Lockamy, Eula Bass, Rena Daughtry, and Bonnie Dunham.

She is survived by daughters, Wanda Beard and Sylvia Moore, 4 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and one to arrive in July; sisters, Annostine Hall and Edna Adair.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  A funeral service will follow at 1:30 pm with burial to follow at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey St.
