Nestor Velazquez

November 28, 1950 ~ June 30, 2022 (age 71)

Nestor Velazquez, affectionately known as Pops, entered Glory near Brevard, North Carolina on June 30th, 2022. He was born on November 28, 1950, in Moca, Puerto Rico to Cirilo and Daniela Velazquez and was the youngest of nine siblings. The family migrated to New York City when he was 4 years old. He graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx.

On December 18, 1971, he married Naomi Nieves and together they had 7 children whom they raised in Fayetteville, NC. Nestor worked at Rohm and Hass, Holt Williamson, Western Publishing, and retired from Goodyear in 2017 where he worked as an industrial mechanic for 21 years.

Nestor was an active member of Covenant Love Church, and served as Usher, Armor Bearer, and leader of the Pastoral Prayer Shield. He was also passionate about working with the Agape Pregnancy Center in his neighborhood.

He was always busy with various “work orders” from friends and family after his retirement. He loved to have anyone come to his house on Sundays after church for “Sunday rice” (arroz con gandules). He always had something funny to say, and always provided an encouraging word when needed. He provided a steady light (and sometimes, a flashlight) to family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 12 noon at Covenant Love Church. The family will receive friends at the Church from 11-12 noon on Monday. Burial will follow in Rockfish Memorial Park.

Nestor is now joined in Glory with his parents, Cirilo and Daniela, and his siblings Rosa and Luis.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Naomi, and his children, Jonathan (Kristina), Paul (Georgia), Reubin (Carolyn), Olive (Frederick), Peter (Donna), Rachel, and Elizabeth. He is survived by his siblings, Inocencia Velazquez, Eladia Cruz, Patricia Cortes, Emilio, Julio, George, and numerous nieces and nephews. Nestor is also survived by his 25 blessings of Abraham: Nathan, Olivia, Felicity, Rosalie, Ruby, Julian, Ivy, Briana, BJ, Amira, Mi'ka-EL, Jordan, Seth, Jeremiah, Benjamin, Isabella, Julianna, Ethan, Jade, Haley, Lexi, Chase, Maximo, Luz, Ariela; and 6 great blessings of Abraham: Owen, Ariana, Brielle, Judah, Nina, Kamari.
