Patricia McClanahan Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Patricia “Patsy” Elaine McClanahan of Fayetteville, NC announce her passing of this world to be with the Lord on June 29, 2024, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital at the age of 87 years.

Born on February 14, 1937, in Fayetteville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Clark and Eula (Bledsole) Clark. She is survived by her children, Becky Gomes and husband, Darrell of Savannah, GA; Carl McClanahan, Jr. of Dallas, TX; Mark McClanahan and wife, Sarah of Fayetteville, NC; and Karen Shweiky and husband, Tammer of Savannah, GA. She was blessed with nine grandchildren, Brooke Gomes, Nicholas Gomes, Courtney McClanahan, Brannon Reynolds, Justin Reynolds, David McClanahan, Camden Shweiky, Lauren Shweiky and Dylan Grace Shweiky; and three precious great grandchildren, William and Jack Gomes, and Chloe Reynolds.

In addition to her parents, Patsy was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. McClanahan and their daughter, Cathy Lynn Hadley, as well as her brothers, Tom and Robert Clark.

Patsy retired with Child Nutrition as a Manager with the Cumberland County School System. She always went above and beyond because she had a passion for encouraging and helping those around her. She was a mentor, fundraiser, encourager and would give a hug to anyone who needed it.

After retirement, she began volunteering at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, initially rocking babies. She began serving on the Hospital Volunteers Auxillary Board as President-Elect, President and Past-President from 2012 until recently. She had a passion for fundraising for the Medical Center. She always had a heart for children and implemented the Teddy Bear Parade where the volunteers brought new teddy bears to be given to children at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital and other agencies. She served as the Fund-Raising Chairperson for the NC Hospital Volunteers Association for 2 years.

Patsy loved her family and friends. She loved to travel and experience life. She enjoyed people and being part of those who make this life a little bit sweeter.

Some years after the loss of her husband, she reconnected with a friend from her youth, Don Beard, and they shared their lives together for the last several years. She welcomed his family as her own, Don Jr. and Karen; their grandchildren, Alex and wife, Kate; Abby and husband, Mike; as well as three great-grandchildren, Aiden, Sadie, and Adlynn.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm at Village Baptist Church, 906 S. McPherson Church Rd., Fayetteville, NC. Funeral services will follow at 12:30 pm and a Burial Service at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Spring Lake, NC at 2:00 pm.
