Philip Everette Edge of Fayetteville passed peacefully away on Monday June 24th 2024 at the Veterans Administration Hospital with his daughter at the bedside.
Philip was born on April 26, 1935, in Raeford, NC to James Lafayette and Nell Funderburk Edge. He attended Hoke County High School and Graduated from Wingate College before entering the US Navy in 1954. Phil was stationed initially in San Diego then in the Marshall Islands . He began as a Boatswain's Mate/Petty Officer, Motorboat Operator followed by training and serving with the Underwater Demolition Frogman team UDT 11 in the final years of the Korean War Conflict. In years following stateside, Philip was a very successful salesman and later Regional Manager with Ortho Diagnostics Pharmaceuticals in territories ranging from Virginia to New England . In the early 1970's, Philip joined his father, James L. in partnership for an Antique Stripping and Refinishing outfit called the Highland Trader which continued on for 40 years. Philip served in the community of Lake Rim serving on the Volunteer Fire Department until 1980. Philip was a distance swimmer putting in laps at the local YMCA and was an accomplished golfer playing in many tournaments at the Fort Bragg Officers Club and many other areas to include participating in the Lewis Grizzard AHA Fundraiser Tourneys in Pinehurst.
Philip met Suzanne Gantt who was Chief Housing Officer at Fort Bragg and it was " love at first sight"! They were married May 2, 1981, and remained so until her death, March 24, 2024. Phil and Suzanne had a wonderful life together and are together now in the heavenly hereafter.
Philip is survived by his brothers, James L. Edge, Jr. (preceded in death by beloved spouse, Joan Weems Edge), Michael Vereen Edge (Kelly), Bruce Nelson Edge (Donna); daughter, Christina Edge Beard (Tommy); granddaughters, Rachel E. Beard (Christopher Pauley), Sarah E. Benore (Anthony); and great grandson, Drew Thomas.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 1, from 12 to 1 pm followed by a funeral service in the Jernigan-Warren Chapel at 1 pm. Burial will take place following a service Tuesday, July 2, at 1pm at the Mausoleum Chapel at Woodridge Memorial Park in Lexington SC.
