Mr. Raymond Marshall Naylor, 85, of Fayetteville, NC, died peacefully, Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Raymond was born, the youngest of eight children, on September 26, 1938, in the Mingo community of Sampson County, NC, to the late Leman Jasper Naylor and Delia Starling Naylor. Ray came to Fayetteville for Business School in 1956 and worked in several companies, subsequently buying Todd’s Tire Service on Russell Street and operating both retail and wholesale tire businesses for 35 years. Marrying his high school sweetheart in 1959, Raymond and Carolyn built a beautiful life in Fayetteville, loving their family, community, and church. A stellar high school athlete, Raymond was an avid fisherman, golfer and games/cards player. He enjoyed many years of travel all around the world and throughout the USA. Ray loved to take his children and grandchildren out on his various boats – with many an adventurous fishing tale to ensue from every occasion! An active member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, Raymond participated in many aspects of ministry in the church and his great passion was being part of the Carpentry Ministry and building wheelchair ramps for others in need. He volunteered with Backpack Buddies and Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch for many years.
A steadfast man of integrity, ‘Poppy’ led his family by quiet example. He is the bedrock of our family and demonstrated how to love fully, support wholly, and strive to solve life’s challenges with humor and innate kindness and gratitude. The sparkle in his blue eyes reflected his zest for life.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carolyn T. Naylor, and three children, Dawn Craddock (husband Steve), Lori Canady (husband Ray), and Brent Naylor (wife Terri, predeceased), five grandchildren, Emily Thomas (wife Heather), Russell Craddock (wife Macy), Daniel Canady, William Canady, Bradley Naylor, and three great-grandchildren, Zoie Hodgeson, Holly Hodgeson, and Tucker Thomas. Ray has one surviving sister, Willa Wilson, of Florida and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 24, from 10:00-10:45am in the Chapel of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, with a memorial service beginning at 11:00am in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SMBC Carpentry Ministry (701 Westmont Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28305) or Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch (531 Hillsboro St., Fayetteville, NC 28301).
