David Nordan Canady, age 84, of Parkton, North Carolina died on July 19, 2022.  The visitation will take place at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home from 6:00pm–8:00pm on Monday, July 25th. 2022.  The funeral will be held at Green Springs Baptist Church in Parkton, North Carolina at 2:00 on July 26th, 2022 and the burial will follow at the church cemetery.  The family will receive guests at 751 Kairos Drive, Parkton, NC 28371.

Mr. Canady was born in Grays Creek, North Carolina on March 15, 1938 to Ernest Richard Canady and Elsie Nordan Canady.  He graduated from Grays Creek High School in 1955 and completed his B.A. in History at Wake Forest College in 1959.  David also earned several graduate degrees, including a M.Div. (1962) and Th.M. (1966) at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary; and a Master’s in Public Administration (1977) at North Carolina State University.  He married the former Jeanne Marie Wright of Ruffin, North Carolina on March 2, 1974.  Mr. Canady began his career as a Baptist minister in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1963 and held several pastorates throughout the following decades in Virginia and North Carolina.  He worked as a chaplain at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana (1967–1968) and as a chaplain and staff member at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania (1968–1970).  From 1972–1984, Mr. Canady served as an Adult Probation Officer with the North Carolina Department of Correction.  For the remaining years of his career, until his retirement in 2001, he served as a prison chaplain for that agency.

Mr. Canady led an active life.  Over the decades, he officiated at the funerals and marriages of many members of his local community and elsewhere.  David also maintained a farm, where he raised beef cattle, hay, and row crops. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly bird hunting, fishing, and cutting firewood. At the time of his death, he was a member of Fayetteville’s First Baptist Church. Mr. Canady was a man of faith, dignity, humor, compassion, and determination. He sought to see the best in people and believed in the possibility of change.  Throughout his life he continued to read and learn and remain engaged in current affairs.  His life revolved around his work in ministry, family, friends, community, and agriculture.

Mr. Canady is predeceased by his parents; a son, David Richard Canady; and brothers, Hoyle Richard Canady and Boyd Pierce Canady. He is survived by wife, Jeanne Wright Canady; son, Andrew McNeill Canady; brother, Ernest Richard Canady (wife Janice); sisters, Martha Canady Bowen, Lynda Canady Gottfried Richter (husband Fred), and Mary Canady Laughlin (husband Michael); and a large extended family.
