LTC Robert T. Garman, US Army, Retired, 92, of Fayetteville, NC died Thursday, August 26, 2024, at his home.
Robert was born October 16, 1931, in Giles County, VA to Burnett K. Garman and Mary Collins Garman.
He graduated from Virginia Tech and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1952. He served in the Army Air Defense Artillery, Field Artillery, as a General Staff Officer and as an ROTC Instructor. LTC Garman served two tours in Vietnam and two tours in Germany. He retired from active duty in July 1985, after more than 33 years of service. During his military career, he served at all levels from Battery to Corps and in assignments as Commander, Staff Officer, Instructor, Inspector General and Advisor. His last active-duty assignment was the Assistant Chief of Staff Services with the First Corps Support Command, Fort Bragg, NC. Among his awards were the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He was a member of The Military Officers Association (MOAA), serving two terms as President of the Cape Fear Chapter and served as President of the NC State Council of Chapters.
He attended the Main Post Chapel on Ft. Bragg and served as an usher.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack D. Garman.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nancy Copenhaver Garman; daughter, Karen Jackson; son, Ashley Garman; daughter-in-law, Nina Oman Garman; grandchildren, Laurel, Melissa, Jacob, and Robert; 3 great granddaughters; and multiple nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 10-11am at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 11am in the Jernigan-Warren Chapel with Full Military Honors.
A private burial will be held on a later date at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
