Robert Haywood McDonald, (Bob) 76, of Eastover and Wrightsville Beach passed away at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. He was born December 20, 1946, to the late Haywood Franklin McDonald and Lucille McLaurin McDonald.
After attending Campbell University, Bob joined his brother Kenneth at McDonald Lumber Company which was founded by their father. They worked together to provide their community with quality building products and excellent customer service while navigating phases of growth and expansion. Bob was president of McDonald Lumber Company until his retirement in April, 2023. As an excellent building contractor, he had an eye for detail. He built commercial and residential properties for over 30 years and received multiple awards for his expertise as a builder. In true Bob McDonald fashion, he valued humbleness over certificates of achievement.
Passionate about many things, Bob loved traveling, boating, and a well-crafted cocktail while watching the sunset with his wife. He was ever curious with an appreciation for meteorology, and he kept his eyes toward the sky. Always a gentleman, his life was defined by bravery, honor and integrity. His word was impeccable. He fiercely loved his family and to him, that included everyone at McDonald Lumber Company. Spending time with his family and friends was what he cherished most, and they could always rely on his strength, love, humor, graciousness and generosity. He was a testament to a life well lived.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister Jane McDonald Hughes.
He is survived by his wife, Wylene Booth McDonald; daughters Stephanie McDonald McVige and Robin McDonald Hosley; grandchildren Schuyler McVige, Ella Hosley, Tanner Hosley and Luci Hosley; brothers Kenneth McDonald and Durwood Sykes; his beloved dog, Playboy; and special friends Marilyn Whitted, Deeneen Robinson Dixon, and Colonel Baldwin; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Cumberland Union Baptist Church Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in Wrightsville Beach at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lineberger Cancer Center at UNC or Cumberland Union Baptist Church in Cedar Creek, North Carolina.
