Rose "Rosemary" Cartner Obituary

Rose Marie (Sweeney) Cartner, of Fayetteville, North Carolina was called home to be with our Lord on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the age of 88.

Rosemary, as she was known by her friends and family, was born to Edward Peter Sweeney and Margaret Hazel (West) Sweeney in Holyoke, Massachusetts on December 23, 1935. She was the youngest of four siblings: brother Edward J. Sweeney, sister Shirley M. Sweeney, and sister Isabelle Sweeney.

Rosemary graduated from St. Jerome High School in Holyoke, MA, in 1953. On April 24, 1954, she married her one true love, Robert (Bob) Cartner. Bob and Rosemary had three daughters, Theresa Ann, Carole Anne, and Donna Marie. She lived a life of travel and adventure as Bob’s Air Force career took their family around the world, living in Puerto Rico, Guam, Thailand, and the Philippines. They finally settled in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1977, where Rosemary and Bob would spend the rest of their lives together.

Rosemary led a successful career in sales, including working as a licensed realtor selling residential real estate. She enjoyed volunteering her time and skills in her community and felt tremendous pride in serving as the Choir Director for St. Joseph Cupertino Parish at Pope Air Force Base for many years. After her retirement, Rosemary and Bob enjoyed spending as much time as possible with their family, hosting their children, grandchildren, and (eventually) great-grandchildren for nearly every holiday. Rosemary never turned-down a competitive game of dominoes with dessert, and she always made sure there were at least two decadent desserts to choose from.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cartner, parents Edward and Margaret Sweeney, siblings Edward, Isabelle, and George Sweeney, and daughter, Carole Arsenault. She is survived by her sister, Shirley Sweeney, daughters Theresa (Cartner) Carter and Donna (Cartner) Depew, grandchildren Jennifer (Arsenault) Alexander, Jason Arsenault, Ryan Carter, Joshua Depew, and Kaitlin Depew, and great-grandchildren (Kethry, Cody, Eliana, Elijah, Avery, and Logan).

Services will be held graveside at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, where Rosemary and Robert will be laid to rest together at a future date (to be determined).
