Roxie "Leona" (Parnell) Penland

Roxie “Leona” Parnell Penland, age 95, died on Friday evening, February 19, 2021, in the house built by her father in 1948, and that she lived in since 1952. She was a 1942 graduate of Seventy-First High School and went on to Campbell College for a short time. She worked as an accountant for many years while keeping house, raising children, and being active in her church, Grace Baptist, and its Jolly Club. Her love of sewing taught by her mother while growing up on a farm with nine brothers and sisters led to her love of a variety of crafts that expanded through her life. Many family and friends who she cared about were recipients of her hand made quilts and other creative items.

She is survived by her son, Gerald Penland (Catherine); six grandchildren, Teresa Gibson Schultz (Rick), Kristina Gibson DeLange (Barry), Geoffrey Gibson, Caren Penland (Sarah), Cherie Penland Smith (Jason), and Joseph Gray Penland; four great grandchildren, Austin Gibson (Gillian), Alexandria DeLange, Thomas DeLange, and Emerson DeLange; one sister Addie B. Williford; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, seven sisters, a daughter, and a great-granddaughter.

No services will be held at this time because of safety concerns for many of her older friends and relatives.
