SFC (Ret.) Larry Chester Mathias, 78, of Cameron, NC passed away Monday May 11, 2020 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
He was born January 17, 1942 in Pound, VA to the late Gladys Stidham Mathias and Homer Mathias. Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Mathias.
Larry served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. During his military career, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge. Following his military service, Larry retired with his wife Kum Ae to Cameron, NC where he enjoyed pursuing his hobby of playing golf. His hobbies also included gardening, listening to music, and playing guitar.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Kum Ae Mathias of Cameron; two daughters Tara Mathias Blaylock and husband Kenneth of Hope Mills, NC and Karen Mathias Lewis and husband William of Germany; five grandchildren Mikayla, Brandon, Kevin, Rebecca, and Christian; and two sisters Jeanette Goff and Linda McAmis.
A private graveside service for the family will be held Tuesday May 19 at Sandhills State Veteran Cemetery in Spring Lake, NC.
Services are entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey Street Fayetteville, NC 28301.
