Sarah Callaghan Obituary

Sarah Ayako (Kushitani) Callaghan, 95, of Fayetteville, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024.  Sarah was born on January 26,1929, and raised in Osaka, Japan by her late parents, Syunzo and Syueno Kushitani. She married her husband, Sergeant Major Charles Callaghan, on October 26,1957.

Sarah loved to watch sporting events on TV, especially football and basketball. Her favorite hobby was making Cranes and other Origami figures.  She was also a member of the Japanese American Association of Kaedi Kae.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; mother-in-law, Mary Tetro; and sister-in-law, Florence Ballantyne.  She is survived by two brothers, Yoshiaki Kushitani and Mitsukuni Kushitani; sister-in-law, Carol Carey; brother-in-law, Paul Ballantyne; niece, Janice Djupstrom (Bruce) and a large family of great nieces and nephews both in the USA and Japan.  She will be dearly missed by her family and multiple friends.

A short memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 2pm in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery Chapel.
