Stephen Smith Obituary

Stephen Gilbert Smith, 73, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Lenoir County to the late Ernest Jackson Smith and Chase Honeycutt Smith, Stephen lived a life marked by devotion to his family, his faith, and the people he served. He was known for his sly grin, quick wit, sharp sense of style, and strong opinions, which he was never shy to share. He was focused, loyal, and always fully engaged—whether with his work, his church, or the people he loved.
He spent his career in banking, retiring from Truist Bank after 32 years of service. His customers remember him not just as a banker, but as someone who genuinely cared, always taking the time to connect, solve problems, and do things the right way.
Stephen was a longtime, dedicated member of Hay Street United Methodist Church, where he was deeply involved in service and community. He was a life member of the Exchange Club of Greater Fayetteville. He served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of America, the Youth Services Advisory Council, and Operation Inasmuch. When Stephen committed to something, he gave it his all, and you always knew where he stood.
Since childhood, Topsail Island held a special place in Steve’s heart. The family beach home became a treasured gathering place—his gift of paradise for his children and grandchildren. He found joy there in fishing from his boat, body surfing waves, and soaking in the beauty of the coast. He rarely missed a sunrise or sunset—and nearly every evening, he'd post a photo with his familiar signoff: “Night, y’all.”
He was a lifelong car enthusiast, a devoted Carolina basketball fan, and someone who loved to joke, tell stories, and speak his mind. He and Vicki, his wife of 51 years, built a life full of love, laughter, and legacy. He was a constant presence at his grandchildren’s games, performances, and every milestone he could possibly attend. He was endlessly proud of them, and he made sure they knew it. We wish to thank the PruittHealth Hospice team, especially Brandi and Chyna. They have met our every need throughout Steve's final days. Their professional knowledge and calming, caring presence made our lives more bearable. Also, thanks to our adopted family member, Corey Grace, who God sent to us at just the perfect time. He helped us in so many ways to navigate life with Steve. He treated Steve with such respect and dignity. We looked forward to his nightly visit. Corey taught us so much.
Stephen is survived by his beloved wife, Vicki Perry Smith; daughters, Leah Smith and husband Duke, and Kara Chadwick and husband Eric; grandchildren, Dallas Smith, Perry Chase Smith, Kenan Chadwick, and Tucker Chadwick; and his sister, Cheryl Smith Weiner.
