Sue Canaday Hubbard of Fayetteville, NC died on February 16, 2021 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert "Sandy" Saunders and Dr. Robbie Byrd officiating. A livestream of the service can be viewed on the Snyder Webpage.
Sue was born October 15, 1943, in Charleston, SC to J.W. “Pete” Canaday & Catherine Canaday. Sue graduated from Hoke County High School in Raeford, NC. She attended Appalachian College (now Appalachian State University) & Gardner Webb University. She became a sweet, thoughtful, and devoted wife to Doyle in 1965, and an amazing mother to Duncan in 1967.
Sue began teaching elementary school in the Cumberland County School System. In the early 1970's, she joined the newly opened childcare center at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church where she was a lead teacher for preschool children. She was a passionate teacher and childcare director, and her unconditional love for children and her family was her greatest gift. “Mrs. Hubbard” was loved dearly by several generations of children.
In the early 1980's, Sue was asked to direct the newly created after-school program at Snyder. This program became her heart and soul. During the school year, children were transported from school to the Snyder After-School Program. They received help with their homework from the staff, known as “counselors,” played with their friends in the gym or in one of the many activity rooms, and could always rely on “Mrs. Hubbard” for a smile, a kind word of encouragement, and a hug. During the summers, Sue planned much-anticipated trips to allow the children to have fun together. Some of Sue’s favorite trips included taking the children to the Outer Banks to see the ocean and Jockey’s Ridge, to Atlanta to see a professional baseball game, and to Busch Gardens to ride roller coasters. But the one she enjoyed most was taking the children camping in the North Carolina Mountains. The children would sleep in tents, staff would cook over a campfire, and during the day, staff would teach the children to fish, swim and mine for gems. Sue continued to direct the after-school and summer programs until her retirement in 2012.
Sue is survived by her husband of 55 years, Doyle Hubbard, of Fayetteville; son, Duncan Hubbard; daughter-in-law, Lisa Hubbard; two granddaughters, Morgan Spears Hubbard & Clara Cathrine Hubbard, both of Fayetteville; a brother, James “Bunk” Canaday of Fayetteville; two nieces, Jessica Cathryn Canaday of Raleigh, and Mary Katherine Stiles (Butler Stiles) of Fayetteville; a grand-nephew, James Miller Stiles; and many other family members and close friends.
