Mrs. Varonda Shuman, age 65 of Fayetteville, NC, was called home Wednesday morning, July 9, 2025, at her residence. She was born August 5, 1959, in Buffalo, New York, a daughter to the late Christine and Hayward Truesdale and sister to Mark, Michael, Myleta Truesdale, and Kimberly Howard.
Ronnie, Schatzi, Ma, and Mema, as she was affectionately known, she was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her journey on this earth was marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. Her passing has left a void in our family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by her. We ask that you remember her not in the way her life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Sergeant Shuman proudly served in the United States Air Force and retired in 1998. Her time in the service not only shaped her life but also led her to meet the love of her life, Mark Shuman, at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. As he fondly recalls, “The Lord directed me to walk an entirely different way to meet the one.” Their union was a beautiful testament to faith, destiny, and enduring love. Through countless PCS moves and long deployments, she held down the fort with unwavering strength, grace, and resilience, anchoring her family with love no matter where life took them.
Her memory also lives on with her kids, Marcia DeLoach, Jamal Shuman, Cartrell, Carlvin Leggett, and their spouses, Stephan Deloach, Portia Taylor, and DaMita, Francis Leggett. She was a devoted and active grandma, aka MEMA, who found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren: Layla, Breanna, Brandon, Byron, TJ, Leilani, Nayeli, Naomi, and Roy. Mema found joy in preparing meals and finding loving gifts to celebrate seasons, sacraments, birthdays, and anniversaries. She had a knack for mailing the perfect card, and it was important to her to attend all birthdays, recitals, graduations, and sacramental celebrations both near and far. Her love for them was boundless, and she cherished every moment shared.
She was a woman deeply loved a soul who lived fully and gave selflessly. Her presence had a quiet power, able to calm even the wildest storms in those around her. With just a smile, she could bring light to the darkest day; with her embrace, she could ease any burden. Known to many as the “Dancing Queen,” she moved through life with joy, grace, and rhythm. She could bake and cook like no other, filling hearts and homes with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of love. Whether you were family or a stranger, she made you feel like you belonged. To know her was to feel truly seen, truly loved, and forever changed.
Her Celebration of Life will be held at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home at 545 Ramsey St., Fayetteville, NC, 28301 on July 19, 2025. The memorial gathering will start at noon, and the Celebration of Life Ceremony will begin at 1 pm.
Come as you are—her favorite color was hunter/emerald, green. Let’s celebrate her life through shared memories and smiling faces, because that’s exactly how she would want us to. We get two days for tears, and the rest for laughter, love, and honoring the joy she brought to us all. Let’s send our guardian angel off right. Let us remember the past with gratitude, live the present with enthusiasm, and look forward to the future with confidence.
