Vivian "Peggy" Burnett Obituary

Vivian "Peggy" Wilkins Burnett, 99, of Hope Mills, NC died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Friday, April 4, 2025.

She was born May 1, 1925, in Granville County, NC to James Gattis and Lillie Fowler Wilkins. The family relocated to Harnett County in the early 1930s and settled on a tobacco farm in the Spring Hill Church Community. She graduated from Boone Trail High School and moved to Fayetteville where she attended and graduated from Worth Business College. After graduation, she went to work at the Laurinburg Maxton Air Base as a Teletype Operator with responsibility for messages sent directly to the Pentagon during the height of World War II. As the war ended, she returned to Fayetteville where she worked at R&W Auto Sales as bookkeeper and title clerk.  It was in Fayetteville where she met the love of her life, Henry H. Burnett.  The two were married on December 4, 1949 in Dillon SC.  Together they made their home in Fayetteville, purchasing their first home. They welcomed her parents to their home in 1951 where they lived until their deaths

After starting their family she then began working for Lafayette Ford as a title clerk. The two of them together had several business ventures, the most notable being the owners and operators of the Country Corral Steak House.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, James 'Jim' and Lillie Wilkins; her husband, Henry H. Burnett; son, Gattis L. Burnett; brothers, Vassar L. Wilkins, Cecil T. Wilkins, James Russell Wilkins; and sister Louise W. Rosser.

She is survived by son, Steve Burnett and wife, Beth of Vander; daughter, Vivian Burnett Scott and husband, Leon of Hope Mills; four grandchildren, Henry Burnett of Eastover, Lane Burnett of Vander, Douglas Scott and wife, Christene of Charlotte; and Shannon Scott Stegland and husband, Garret of Apex; five great grandchildren, Amelia, Noah and Ethan Scott, Harper and Nora Stegland. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you and sincerest gratitude to Mrs. Tausha Brown, Mrs. Charlene Johnson and Mrs. Jessica Howard for their amazing care, compassion, comfort and fierce protection of "Ms. Peggy" while always preserving her dignity.  She appreciated everything these wonderful ladies did for her and she loved you.
