William Emory (Bill) Owen, 84, of Fayetteville passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Autumn Care Skilled Nursing Home, Fayetteville.
Bill was born October 18, 1936 in Cumberland County to the late Nellie Fisher and Emory Craven Owen. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Alice Owen Pate, and his grandson Joshua Michael Owen.
Bill worked for Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home from 1955 til 1970. He attended Embalming School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
On January 2, 1970, he began as a State of North Carolina employee. He was hired as the investigator for the first Public Defender’s Office opened in North Carolina. He retired from there with thirty years of service.
In his early adult years, he was involved in many civic clubs in Fayetteville. He was a member of the Fayetteville Jaycees, Fayetteville exchange club, the FILI, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. At one time, he was president of the Jaycees and the Exchange Club, as well as Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also Jaycee of the year and Exchangite of the year. He was a member of the city of Fayetteville board of education in the 1960’s. He was a member of the Masons, Phoenix Lodge, and the Shriners. He was included in the 1964 edition of Who’s Who, Young Men in America.
Memorial Service will be held on Thursday August 12, 2021 at 12 pm, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home with Rev Scott Foster officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:30-11:30 am. Burial will be held at Lafayette Memorial Cemetery at 1 pm. The family will also be receiving friends at the home of Bill’s daughter, Kim Shore, 3701 Tampa Ave in Fayetteville, before and after the services.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia Lewis Owen; daughter Kim Owen Shore and husband Jerry, sons Billy Owen and wife Patty, and Mike Owen; 5 grandchildren, Beth Owen, Brittany Shore Nuzum and husband Josh, Katie Owen Tomb and husband Ryan, Christopher Owen, and Brandon Owen and wife Caroline; and 3 great grandsons, Alex Bloodworth, Ayden Nuzum, and Jayce Nuzum.
