With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of William Headrick “Bill” Owen, who left us on February 23, 2025, at the age of 87, after a period of declining health. Bill, a man of faith, peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Bill was born on February 15, 1938, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but moved with his family at an early age to Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of the late Judson Harold Owen and Pearl Headrick Owen.
Bill graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. During his time at Auburn, he was an active member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and served as president of his chapter. A lifelong Auburn supporter, Bill was proud to be a War Eagle and never missed an opportunity to cheer on his beloved Auburn Tigers.
Following his graduation, Bill began his professional career with Sears, Roebuck & Company in Greenville, South Carolina, where he met and married his wife, Elva Garren. His career with Sears spanned 35 years, which involved numerous relocations before retiring from the Fayetteville store. In his later years, Bill found fulfillment in working with Duggins-Smith, where he contributed to affordable housing efforts.
Outside of his professional life, Bill was passionate about golf and traveling, with one of his greatest thrills being the opportunity to play the historic St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland. He was a longtime member of Highland Presbyterian Church and the J. M. Wilson Sunday School Class. Bill also gave back to his community through his involvement in local organizations, including the Rotary Club, United Way, Arts Council, Chamber of Commerce, and the Military Affairs Committee.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Elva Garren Owen, as well as his dear family: son John Garren Owen and wife Stacy of Winston-Salem, NC; daughter Catherine Cuomo and husband Mike of Cary, NC; daughter Lesley Disbrow and husband Josh of Denver, CO; daughter Laura Bravo and husband Santiago of Lexington, KY; and daughter-in-law Carla Owen of Richmond, VA. Bill was also a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Stephen, Christopher, Eliza, Charlie, Lindsey, Catalina, and Aaron. He is also survived by his brother, Jay Owen and wife Vera of Edison, New Jersey, and their children, Sunny and David. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Dr. William Jason Owen.
Bill’s family, friends, and all who knew him will forever remember his warm smile and friendliness, his gracious and generous spirit, and his commitment to loved ones and community.
A Celebration of Bill's life will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 2 pm at Highland Presbyterian Church. A reception will be held at the church following the ceremony.
